A Visitation of Bats: October, 2023 Featured Poem

I wrote this in October last year. When I started looking for them again, I was reminded of this poem. Besides, it is Halloween!

A Visitation of Bats

On my evening walk
as the last of the sunset glow
seeps into the ocean,
I am surprised by a cauldron of bats.

They swirl, leaves caught in updrafts,
gray motion against the fading sky.
No wind. Just a slight rustle overhead
and a sound smaller than a chitter.

Fast bodies flash in the street lamp,
dart in and out of light pools.
Insects seeking an electric moon
are instead drawn into death
by miniature dark angels
with twitching ears of Chihuahuas
and gargoyle faces.

The anguish of my day
vanishes, snatched out of the darkness
by sharp teeth.

  1. This is really excellent. It weaves back and forth in ideas and feelings just as the bats twist and turn in flight. A lot to think about. Pat
