City Park Devotions: July, 2024 Featured Poem

Recovering from my first documented case of COVID-19, I have been spending even more time than usual gazing out my window at the park across the street. The vista of trees, sky, hawks, ravens, people, and dogs constantly changes. I hope you all stay as safe as you can in this new surge.

City Park Devotions

My desk looks down on a wooded park in San Francisco
with a field, paths, many Monterey pines and cypress.
Between tree gaps on the little knoll
are glimpses of the Pacific Ocean.

Frisbee is played, cigarette breaks taken,
birthday parties celebrated and friends walk together.
The dogs and their people bring themselves
here to run, often off-leash.

Dogs frisk, play catch, bark, sniff,
attempt to dig out gophers,
fail and run off distracted
by some other species of fun.

Today, a man parked his van below my window
and turned to his dog in the front seat to take her picture.
Nobody but me, and her, saw him, so in love.
