Dazzled In The Coffee Shop: February, 2025 Belated Featured Poem

We are about to have another atmosphere river, maybe the last of the season. Join me in loving our moments of sun!

Dazzled In The Coffee Shop

January sun forces itself past rain clouds
and into the coffee house window
at just the right angle to light up my face.
Red and yellow rays fill my closed eyes.
Caress me like suede and silk.

Customers bustle in with their poodle mixes,
toddlers in strollers or full backpacks.
All eager to be in this crowded cafe,
tasting their latte, cappuccino, dirty chai,
cold-brew, or cortado – chatting to each other.

As I lift my eyes to the sudden sun,
I feel a startling connection – conjunction
with those similarly touched – the new Mayor,
kids on playgrounds, panhandlers on the Panhandle,
EMTs drinking coffee with firefighter colleagues.

The sunlight also reaches noses of coyotes
beginning to rouse, warms bald tails of rats,
reflects off solar panels, heats tail feathers
of ravens, flashes green hummingbirds.
It all seems so equitable.

In prayer or blessing,
our star’s waves nuzzle us.
Hands, cheeks, lips,
the only sips of my skin
uncovered to this flaming intimacy.

  1. Love this sunny morning coffee shop poem. If possible, I always choose the sunny table / seat at a restaurant! I have often thought of the rich and poor all able to share the same weather, walk along the free beach shoreline, public parks, listening to the birds, sunny or starlit skies.

thanks for sharing your thoughts and creative words.
