Dreams of Bats: September, 2025 Featured Poem

It is almost October and I start looking for our annual bats. This is a little early for Halloween but I thought you might enjoy this poem.

In other news, I am working on my fourth poetry book! Hope to have it out in 2026. The working title is Cadence, or possibly Crosswinds or Lexicon of Days. More info as time goes on.

Also, Blue Light Press is posting a poetry reading on Zoom for our writing group sisters to read from our book “Season Lightly With Salt.” Event is at 6:00 PM October 3, 2025. If you are not already signed up with Blue Light at the Gallery send RSVP to Bluelightpress@aol.com and she will send you the sign-in info. See you there!
Thank you to Clément Falize on Unsplash for the lovely bat sky photo.

Dreams of Bats

During the autumn twilight
of insect emergence,
a colony of bats swoop in
seeking a feast.

Aerial predators strafe
through streetlight umbras.

Subliminal squeaks, chitters
and soft slidings
of non-feathered wings
fill the air.

Fragments of nightmares
twist quickly away
back into darkness.

Morning – amber wings
of termite drones flutter
and twirl in spider webs.

  1. Hi Heather,
I love your bat poem. Thanks for sharing your poems with me.
I found some pictures of you and Fred visiting us as I was hunting photos for St. Michael’s 75th celebration of beginning with Paul as first priest. It’s nice that pictures evoke all kinds of memories including your visit.
I so appreciate your keeping in touch with me. You and your family are precious to me. We visited your parents in Duxbury when our kids were little. They remember that time well.
Good luck with your next book. I like the title cadence as it floats above the first movement of your work. Could be the last movement as well if you so wish.
    Much love,
    Oleta
